APA’s seminar in Mobile, Alabama drew 70 builders, designers, engineers, code officials and product suppliers.
October 17, 2008
High winds are an obvious issue in Mobile, Alabama situated near the head of Mobile Bay, 15 miles from the Gulf Coast. APA presented information on wind resistant design including details of combined shear & uplift and construction strategies contained within the Wood Frame Construction Manual, an AF&PA publication. The attendees indicated that the information was right on target as many in the audience were not familiar with these wood frame building techniques. In addition, the seminar covered aspects of raised wood floor construction another vital topic in this flood prone region.
Roughly 40 of the seminar registrants attended the demonstration house immediately afterwards. This raised wood floor demonstration home is a partnership with local builder B.C. Daniels. Attendees were treated to a catered meal and entertainment at the house. Many in the crowd asked detailed questions about the raised floor details, LP’s radiant roof sheathing, Norbord’s Stabledge flooring, and Windstorm panels. They also asked about the “Go-Bolts,” a continuous thread rod tie-down system used by the builder in some corner locations.
